POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Department of Visual Arts within the Division of Arts and Humanities at UC San Diego is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. The Department invites applications for an artist with an art practice focusing on time-based media with an emphasis in film/video or a moving image maker.

The applicant's creative approach should be conceptually rich and conversant with contemporary and emerging discourses around time-based art. The applicant should demonstrate a knowledge of film/video or moving image production technologies. We are looking for an artist whose time-based or moving image process connects with the avant-gardes, contemporary art, and critical & expanded approaches to the discipline. Candidates should have an exhibition record demonstrating considerable recognition and teaching experience at the undergraduate level.

The successful candidate will teach in the department's undergraduate Media major, an area that spans analog and digital photography, film, digital media, and the history, theory and criticism of film and media. We are especially interested in hearing from artists who have a willingness and demonstrated capacity to work in an interdisciplinary context that includes undergraduate majors in studio, digital art, speculative design, art history, and media history and theory. The position also entails teaching in the Department's MFA program and contributing as needed to the Ph.D. programs in art history, theory and criticism and art practice. We seek candidates whose research, teaching, and service records demonstrate their capacity to contribute to diversity and inclusion.

Teaching will encompass the entire curricular range from large undergraduate lecture courses to intermediate production and technique courses, advanced undergraduate production and critique courses, and graduate seminars for MFA and PhD Art Practice students. Undergraduate courses would include such areas as introductory video making; conceptual development of media projects; editing theory and practice; and advanced topics courses like “Strategies of Self” or “Fiction & Allegory.” All department faculty are expected to advise, work with, and serve on the committees of MFA students in all areas.

Rank and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience based on UC pay scales.

QUALIFICATIONS
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
MFA or Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Visual Art, New Media practice, or related field required prior to the time of appointment.

Preferred qualifications
Teaching and academic experience at the undergraduate level.
Professional recognition and/or distinguished scholarship.
Trajectory for developing a national and international reputation.
Research, teaching and service demonstrate their capacity to contribute to diversity and inclusion.
