a solo exhibition by lee welch
28th June 2004 - 13th August 2004

“My work attempts to capture the seemingly uncontrollable transient of time. Through my efforts to regain some control and understanding of the perception of time, I have created an evolving portrait though a means of self-preservation.”

American artist Lee Welch presents a unique visual monologue. A series of video portraits, an on-going project, where by the artist has videoed himself for a 30 second period every day. The consistency of the pose and detached almost unemotional expression emanate feelings of a sombre nature, which reflect on our preoccupation with the escalating pressures of our daily existence. The work also poses as a document of the mundane of modern life in our attempts to fulfilling all our material goals.

The work is to be exhibited in five venues, Alliance Electric, Art trail, Cork. Dixxons, Project Art Center and online simultaneously. The collective of the five exhibiting spaces means that the viewer when experiencing the work may be conscious that the work exists elsewhere at the same time, yet each as a separate entity.

“Where most consider their relationship to the universe I contemplate relationships of my various selves to one another.”

Born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1975. Welch studied at the Academy of Art College, California. He has exhibited internationally in solo and group shows in the Luggage Store (U.S.A.), Goethe Institut Inter Nations (Ireland), CMU Art Museum (Thailand) and the Pixel City (Slovenia). His work is in the corporate collection of TBWA/CHIAT/DAY along with private collections internationally. He was awarded the Sculptors' Society of Ireland’s ‘Exercises in Folkatronica’ residency. The work produced there will be presented in ARTIADE - Olympics of Visual Art in Athens from 12 August to 29 September 2004. The end of June will be the launch o f"again & again" a solo exhibition at Tallaght Community Arts Centre and will be presented in "Soundworks" in Arttrail, Cork. Early 2005 will see another solo exhibiton at Custom House Studios Limited, Mayo.
