Job Opportunities At Sandbox, University Of Central Lancashire

Sandbox, The Centre for Digital and Creative Industries is a new initiative from the University of Central Lancashire that brings together a wide range of skills and expertise to allow the generation of new and collaborative forms of working. Its creative workspace, facilities and research staff will enhance the capabilities of cross disciplinary forms of development and production. Director Professor Simon Robertshaw is leading this new initiative which will be situated in the new Digital Media Factory, Preston, due to open in September 2007.

Initially we wish to make a number of appointments that will build a successful team of research practitioners, facilitators and developers.
The Sandbox itself will be a Centre that will provide two key elements.

+ Firstly a unique combination of interdisciplinary practitioners that develops new digital interactive service innovations in collaboration with and influencing industry culture and communities.

+ Second by providing an innovation environment that will allow companies, cultural organisations to engage, debate, and find solutions through a unique combination of interdisciplinary activity, creative technology and expert facilitation.

We are interested in individuals, companies, institutions, cultural organisations that wish to collaborate on the development of new innovative prototypes, services that challenge our expectations of digital media technology. Practice based MPhil/PhD

Sandbox is offering a number of bursaries to help support creative practitioners develop a substantial body of work that will contribute to a MPhil or PhD. For more information contact [email protected].


We are currently seeking to fill the following positions:


+ Interaction Programmer / Developer (x 2 posts)

You will be a critical part of a new team that forms the technical and creative knowhow of Sandbox in the delivery of exciting and practical interactive solutions. Targeted media may vary from web, mobile, massive big screens, gallery, DVD, …. Working as a part of a team or as an individual you are able to advise on, reuse, adapt or create from scratch, innovative digital content frameworks, total interactive solution or games to maximize the end users experience. You have a passion for technology and have a clear, practical and critical appreciation of the current and future technological landscape. You love and are able to solve technical problems. You are fluent in a number of programming or scripting languages.


+ Creative facilitator

You will have principal responsibility for the management, maintenance and smooth running of Sandbox as a creative facilitation space. You will attract, discuss the needs of, and facilitate new and existing clients, both internal and external to the University. You will actively help to develop and research new forms of creative facilitation methods and workshops. You’ll work with the research and development team to explore innovative technological solutions to make Sandbox at the cutting edge of creative facilitation.


+ Research assistant

The Research Assistant will assist in the day to day operation and development of the Sandbox research and creative workspace. They will provide support and assist in the development of new solutions for digital content applications and delivery mechanisms. Experience in working and communicating with groups, preferably in an academic context both as researcher and administration role is necessary.

+ Big Screen Researcher

An exciting post supported by the BBC Live Events and Hewlett Packard. We wish to appoint a person to advise and assist in the development of various creative and technological developments for Big Screens (LED, LCD, Indoor, Outdoor). The post holder will be expected to assist in establishing and maintaining links across the University, BBC, Hewlett Packard and other parties. The postholder will work as a part of a team in generating and testing interactive solutions for Big Screen technology.
