The works for the exhibitions will be selected on a competitive basis by an international award panel.
The organizers invite the artists to submit digital prints and digital video in the form of «tondo» to the competition.
The exhibition "ILLUMINATORS" opens the "Art-Koltsovo" program.

The exhibition
The exhibition will show modern versions of «tondo» – the form of pictures with ancient traditions.
We accept electronic files of works which can be reproduced by the organizers like as digital prints, light boxes, video objects/installations and video projections,. The organizers are going to challenge the interior environment of the international terminal of "Koltsovo" airport. Visually the exposition will be represented by numerous round spots of lights "floating/hovering" free in the airport cubage.

Participants
Any artists working in the field of new media are invited.

Works of art
Digital graphics, digital photos, digital animation, video objects, video installation, single-channel video.

Concept
In Russian an "illuminator" (port hole, bull’s eye) is a round window onboard a ship, airplane, space station.
The concept of the project is based on the round shape of the exhibited works of art. This formal principle
is closely connected with on the one hand the image of aircrafts and air travels (till recently planes have had round bull’s eyes); on the other hand it plastically continues and supports the idea of the round plafonds in the foyer of the terminal where the exposition will be installed. Here the formal aspects of concept close down the meaning of the word ILLUMINATORS in the majority of European languages, where the Latin word means a lighting unit, a source of light, a screen, somebody or something shedding light, lighting and also an artist illustrating/decorating manuscripts. That’s why ILLUMINATORS are not only works of art but also those creating them - artists.
A round is the most harmonious shape, a fundamental archetypical sign offering a vast variety of associations. One of its most obvious meanings is the world. In this case ILLUMINATOR is an artist’s worldview projection or worldview magnifying glass or "window" into artist’s world.
The exposition of "ILLUMINATORS" exhibition visually and conceptually coincide with the name of the airport "Koltsovo" ("koltso" is Russian for a "ring"; ring - round). The exhibition will be opened on the eve of the Day of Cosmonautics. Russian cosmonautics started in "Koltsovo" as the first jet engines were tested here.
The project is aimed to create a positive, emotionally rich environment in the waiting rooms of the international terminal. Besides the exhibition provides the passengers and guests of the airport with the recent achievements of international contemporary art.

"Art Koltsovo" program
"Art-Koltsovo" is the first strategic long-term program in Russian air industry aimed at introduction of works of art and designs inside the international "Koltsovo" airport and in its adjacent territory.

The organizers of the program
International "Koltsovo" airport (Yekaterinburg, Russia) www.koltsovo.ru
International "Koltsovo" airport is one of the leading airports in Russia. Derived from Kurosawa's film version of Macbeth, Spider Web Castle, 'Moving Forest' renders the film's final sequences
(12 minutes in length) into a 12-hour 'sonica' of grand scale. Video games have been around for over forty years, and have redefined our reality with classics such as “Pac-Man”, “Asteroids”, “Centipede” and “Missile Command”.

Video game consoles, which offered low-resolution graphics known as 8-bit, were introduced in the 1970s. But it wasn't until the early 1980s that they became wildly popular, moving video games from the arcade into the home with the Atari 2600 game console.

That console featured a distinctive joystick, and Flanagan takes visitors back to the seminal period by turning the Atari joystick into a super-sized work of art that she considers a form of social sculpture.

Flanagan investigates everyday technologies through critical writing, artwork, and activist design projects.

“Mary Flanagan makes art and popular culture become one, following in the tradition of pop art,” said Ricardo Dominguez, a visual arts professor and member of the Gallery at Calit2 programming committee. “She also explores the aesthetics of gameplay, which today has extended beyond video games to influence media and culture at large.”

The artist’s work has been exhibited internationally at museums, festivals and galleries, including the Whitney Museum of American Art. “The exaggerated scale of [giantJoystick]’s installation emphasizes the physicality (and absurdity) of interfaces in their relationship to the human body and human interaction,” said Christiane Paul, adjunct curator of new media arts at the Whitney Museum . “Rather than treating the joystick as mere access point to the ‘other’ of the virtual world on a screen, the project highlights the joystick’s role in and connection to the physical world and the social
nature of play.”

Mary Flanagan’s work has also been exhibited at the Guggenheim, SIGGRAPH, The Banff Centre, Central Fine Arts Gallery NY, Artists Space NY, the University of Arizona, University of Colorado-Boulder, as well as institutions in Brazil, France, UK, Canada, Taiwan, New Zealand, and Australia. Flanagan’s projects have been funded by the National Science Foundation, the Pacific Cultural Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Flanagan holds MFA and MA degrees from the University of Iowa , a BA in Film from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee , and a Ph.D. in Computational Media focusing on activist game design from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design , UK . She teaches in the Integrated Media Arts MFA program in the Department of Film and Media Studies at Hunter College , NYC. Her research group and laboratory in New York is called TiltFactor, a lab focused on the design of activist and socially-conscious software. http://www.tiltfactor.org.

The Gallery at Calit2 reflects the nexus of innovation implicit in Calit2's vision, and aims to advance our understanding and appreciation of the dynamic interplay among art, science and technology. The space is located off the main lobby of Atkinson Hall on the Engineering Courtyard of the UC San Diego campus (9500 Gilman Drive , La Jolla , CA 92093 ). This year, Rhizome has expanded our scope, formerly focused strictly on Internet-based art to encompass the broad range of practices that fall under new media art. This includes projects that creatively engage new and networked technologies to works that reflect on the impact of these tools and media in a variety of forms. With this expanded format, commissioned works can take the final form of online works, performance, video, installation or sound art. Projects can be made for the context of the gallery, the public, the web or networked devices. This year, all applicants will be reviewed by a selected jury and several awards will be granted through Rhizome's membership in an open, community vote. Proposal submission takes place online. I'd love to have people take a look at the post and share their thoughts: Coffee, knitting, rice, and data.
