pixelated image generator

Hi, at sometime around the late 90's early 00's there was an internet art project where you would submit a picture, the program would add your image to it's database and generate a new picture by creating a mesh of "pixel"s of your image, say by dividing your images into a 30x30 grid. Each "pixel" was replaced by another image in the database whose median color equaled the median color of the "pixel" in the mesh it was replacing.

I'm not sure I explained that very well, but does anyone remember this project, and knows if it is still in operation?

Thanks

John,

I think what you're referring to is 'photomosaics'. Just Google photomosaics and you'll find plenty of places to upload your own photo and turn it into a photomosaic.

If you like pixelated images - I've developed a site where you can upload your own photo and turn it into a 'paint-by-pixel' numbered grid. You can use my calibrated art materials to create a physical pixelated artwork. See www.diyart.com

If you want to try it out I can send you a pack of 'Pixel Pens' - just use the contact form on the site.
