AS A SATELLITE is a new program of the Visual Arts Department of The Americas Society (AS). This program invites artist-run centers and non-profit organizations in Latin America, Canada, and the Caribbean to use The Americas Society as their satellite for the production of exhibitions and event-based projects in New York.
To participate in AS A SATELLITE, please present a proposal to the Visual Arts Department. There is no application form, but in order for your center/organization to be considered, you must submit a Project Proposal Description including all of the materials listed under the section Documentation Requirements.
Project proposals can be submitted by an artist-run center or non-profit organization in Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean. Collaborative project proposals, for example, a single project proposal prepared jointly by two or more centers/organizations, may also be considered. Proposals in Spanish, Portuguese, French and English, are accepted.
A. PROJECT PROPOSAL DESCRIPTION
Project proposals should be a text of 750 words in length (maximum length: 1500 words).
The proposal text should elaborate on (a) the concept of the project, including the criteria for selection of the participants and/or the project's framework; (b) how the proposal manifests the mission of your center/organization; © if there is a particular preference in project dates, specify which these dates would be. (Project proposals may take place at a consolidated time-period, a single-day event, or involve various phases that take place at assorted time-periods.) Please note that a working time-line is not required at this stage.
Project proposals may include, but are not limited to, temporary exhibitions, video-screenings, performances, lectures, symposia, workshops or any combination of these. Project proposals may be for or require the use of The Americas Society facilities, however, some proposals may take place at other venues in New York City. (These other venues would be approached once the project proposal is selected, and would be decided in discussion with the selected organization/space.) In any case, floor plans of the Gallery and of the 2nd floor of The Americas Society, namely, the Mexican Room and the Salon Simon Bolivar, spaces which have been used for performances, temporary exhibitions, and public programming, are available on-line; floor-plans may also be faxed or mailed if requested.
B. DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS
1. HISTORY OF YOUR ARTIST-RUN CENTER OR NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION
This can be a curriculum vitae of your center/organization or a brief chronicle (maximum length: 1000 words).
Collaborative project proposals, i.e. those project proposals prepared jointly by two or more centers/organizations, would need to submit a curriculum vitae or a brief chronicle of each of the centers/organizations involved (considering the same specifications as above).
Include a 1 paragraph biographical statement on each of the key participants included in the project proposal, including the author(s) or director(s) of the project proposal. (Each statement should contain a maximum of 350 words.)
3. PRELIMINARY PROJECT BUDGET
The average project falls in the US$600 - US$4,000 range. Consider that the AS A SATELLITE consists of a co-production entailing a matching-fund, namely, AS A SATELLITE will cover general operating costs, and, depending on each case, may sponsor all or part of the costs manifested in your proposal budget. Therefore, additional funding from other sources may be required for extraordinary expenses in items such as participant's travel costs, honoraria, equipment rental, materials, etc. In any case, indicate in your budget ALL projected expenses, and specify which items can be covered by your center or organization and which items (not figures) would ideally be covered by AS.
Please note that this would only be a preliminary budget. If your proposal is selected, a detailed budget will be discussed and prepared in collaboration with The Americas Society.
