A fun thought experiment: compare the link between the hobby horse and
the random/irrational/ridiculous/etc. in the works of Laurence Sterne
(a theme, it seems, in Tristam Shandy, though I haven't finished it
yet), Walter Scott (in Reliquae Trotcosiensis, "gabion" is, at least
at first, his pet word for hobby-horse), and Tristan Tzara
("Dada"="hobby-horse").
