Qualifications: Graduate MFA degree emphasizing digital media =20
practice or PH.D in Art History or New Media research/practice is =20
required. Demonstrated record of professional activities including =20
exhibitions and publications is required. This position is directly =20
affiliated with the CADRE Laboratory for New Media, an =20
interdisciplinary academic program emphasizing experimental practice =20
and research. Candidates must demonstrate artistic achievement in an =20
area of expertise informing the intersection of information culture =20
and contemporary art. Candidates must demonstrate familiarity with =20
emerging media and technologies as well as theoretical sophistication =20=

in cultural studies or social practices of digital media and =20
technology. Candidates with expertise in emerging areas of artistic =20
practice, history, and theory that involve mobile computing, gaming, =20
mapping, social networks, network art or information visualization =20
are preferred. Candidates with demonstrated theoretical or critical =20
authorship and/or curatorial practice, with community or public art =20
expertise desirable. Applicants should have awareness of and =20
sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as =20=

might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching =20
and other comparable experience. Teaching experience at the =20
university level is preferred.



The CADRE Laboratory under the Directorship of Joel Slayton, is a =20
unique platform for trans-disciplinary practice and research =20
<cadre.sjus.edu>. CADRE is host to FUSE: an artists research =20
residency in collaboration with the Montalvo Arts Center =20
<cadre.sjsu.edu/fuse> and is a visionary partner in the newly formed =20
biennale festival - 01SJ: A Global Festival of Art on the Edge =20
<01sj.org>. CADRE is the publisher of SWITCH, the on-line journal of =20=

new media theory and practice <switch.sjsu.edu>. San Jos=E9 State =20
University is California=92s oldest institution of public higher =20
learning. The campus is located on the southern end of San Francisco =20
Bay in downtown San Jos=E9 (Pop. 945,000), hub of the world-famous =20
Silicon Valley high-technology research and development center. A =20
member of the 23-campus CSU system, San Jos=E9 State University enrolls =20=

approximately 30,000 students, a significant percentage of whom are =20
members of minority groups.



This faculty position has direct responsibilities associated with =20
administration of CADRE special programs including publishing, =20
exhibiting, and symposia, as well as supervising sponsored projects. =20=

Faculty from Fine Arts, Graphic and Industrial Design, Art Education, =20=

Museum Studies and Art History are involved; the faculty member is =20
therefore expected to display leadership skills and demonstrate a =20
record of fundraising or development skills including grant writing =20
and/or individual solicitation for sponsored research projects. =20
Academic responsibilities include teaching a range of undergraduate =20
and graduate courses in digital media and in the Art History program.



Salary Range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
