A 21st Century Dogma for the Networked Theatre of the Oppressed 007

"I swear to submit to the following set of rules drawn up and
confirmed by
the DOGME of the Networked Theatre of the Oppressed 007:

1.) Rehearsals must occur offworld. IRC or Skype are acceptable.
Props and sets should never be acquired using lindon dollars
(if a particular prop or skill set becomes necessary for the performance
of an act, this has to be self-designed: sharing is not only accepted,
but mandatory: ring the second life world to an economic stage of
hyperinflation (or devaluation) is the ultimate goal.

2.) The sound must never be brought from an outside source unless an
online equivalent is not available. The online word has thousands of
sound archives waiting to be used.

3.) It will only be regarded as a certificated performance when
properly documented and published on the net. Sound quality,
rendering. image resolution, excellence of these requirements are not
regarded as a priority goal: we believe imperfection has a central
role in internet art.

4.) The text has to be typed in real time. No cut and paste is
allowed. Performance online needs also to be alive.

5.) Real actors must be behind the avatars. Networked theatre of the
oppressed it's about human beings interacting in online social worlds.
Bots are definitely not allowed.

6.) Unnecessary cybersex scenes are not allowed (that is to say the
action takes place only within the directrices of the theatre of the
oppressed).

7.) Temporal and geographical alienation are forbidden. (That is to
say that the performance takes place here and now.)

8.) Genre performances are only acceptable if they are working with
multiple genres at once.

9.) The play format must be .jpg screenshots and/or you tube videos.

10.) The author must not be credited.

Furthermore I swear as a director to refrain from personal taste!
I am no longer a net.artist. I swear to refrain from creating a "work"
which could be placed in galleries, presented at conferences, summer
academies, postgraduate courses, New York Times articles, as I
believe the internet media is the only possible medium for this kind
of performance. I regard the instant as more important than the
whole: the situation as prevalent over the product. And the effect
on second life economy and the Lindon dollar more important than
the possible profit. My supreme goal is to fully assimilate within
the lie of a wrong life, for this I can use any free material of the
community or anything that is available as open source. I swear to do
so by all means available and at the cost of any bad taste which
might lead the character and performance to self-termination at an
announced end. We make a performance, document it, describe
strategies, but the characters and situations are immediately
terminated as a mean of reaffirming the natural cycle of life
which it's denied to us by the Lindon OS.

Thus, I undersign the above, remembering that programming is allowed
under certain circumstances and that hacking is a social practice to
be taken into account. And that anyone following the dogma becomes
part of our secret agenda of second life sabotage.:"

I, as part of (but not representing all of the voices of) Second Front,
SL's first international performance art troupe, in existence (in whole
or in part) since 2004, cannot swear by this. We respect such
dedication to a purist/formalist agenda, but as an absurdist/critical
art group, we also understand that there are cultural aspects of SL that
must be engaged in a sense of play and critical inquiry, including
capitalism, sociological excess/deviance, authenticity and the like.

Thank you for this manifesto. However, we believe in the freedom to
create works necessary to the contexts of our concepts. We also
understand that, depending on context, almost any or all of these
criteria would have to be negotiated or compromised in order to examine
the issues behind them.

We look forward to possibly working with you in the future, and thank
you for your contribution.
