He stood when he was told to stand and he sat when he was told to sit.
He went when he was told to go and he came when he was told to come.
He chased when he was told to chase and he bit when he was told to
bite. Then

He turned old, no longer useful, the dog owner sold the dog to the dog
merchant. And his boiled limp flesh and bones became a meal for some
greedy people. The dog owner was quite satisfied eating the dog he had
once adored.

The only thing the dog left behind was his cheap hide. Along with a
falsehood that there was a lesson here, more valuable than the hide.
