News from the Earthquake Zone

Dear all,

I (Regina Pinto) collaborated (a little bit > the image and some other
stuff)
with artist Millie Niss to create News from the Earthquake Zone
(http://www.sporkworld.org/kashmir/) a web-work about the October, 2005
earthquake in Kashmir. This work shows the news from Kashmir in the form of
animated snow falling on a backround image made up of Himalayan scenes and
images of the earthquake victims. The snowflakes each carry a letter, and
spell out sentence fragments describing the situation in the earthquake
zone. The letters blow around, as if subject to the winter's wind, and
slowly fall until they melt into the landscape. The work is entirely in
black-and-white, emphasizing the starkness of the remote mountain region
affected by the earthquake. A soundtrack made up of snatches of Pakistani
and Indian music, combined with wind, weather, and the sounds of the earth
trembling, accompanies the piece. The work is a memorial to the victims, a
tribute to the suffering of the survivors, and a plea to the rest of the
world to contribute to the relief effort. There are links to background
information about Kashmir and the earthquake on the work's title page, and
the main page has a link to the International Committee of the Red Cross,
where viewers can send their donations towartds earthquake relief.

We are waiting for you there (http://www.sporkworld.org/kashmir/) ,

Millie Niss
