The Web as a Digital Gallery: Making a Website of Images

Working with Dreamweaver, students in this course will construct a basic HTML-based website designed for the display of digital images. Participants may bring their own digitized images in any format; images from the Edna Lawrence Nature Lab will also be available. At the end of the workshop each student has an online portfolio of approximately six images. Students can upload the pages to their own web address if available, or burn them to a CD.

Improve + Correct Your Photographs in Adobe Photoshop

Learn to bring out the best in your images by correcting lighting and poor color balance. Discover how creative cropping and enlarging make for greater impact. Bring already scanned photographs or downloaded digital photographs to this one-day intensive, and leave with images prepared for printing as well as a better understanding of resolution, compression and color profiles.

PowerPoint for Image Presentations

What will you do when asked to speak about your work? A practical approach to using PowerPoint for artists, designers, historians and others, this intensive course concentrates on letting the work speak for itself. No PowerPoint bells and whistles; the techniques presented in this class focus on creating easy, elegant, controlled sequences of existing images. Participants in the workshop may bring their own digitized images in any format; images from the Edna W. Lawrence Nature Lab will also be made available.

Digital Video: the Basics

Learn the creative possibilities of basic video editing using the features accessible in iMovie. We will produce short videos of approximately 3 minutes, edited from 5-10 minutes of footage, and what you learn in the process can serve as the foundation for understanding more complex editing packages. Participants in this workshop may bring their own short digital videos, or shoot video during class (bring your digital camera if you have one). Participants also receive an overview of how to prepare their digital videos for DVD, and should therefore bring blank mini-dv tapes, DVD disks, or firewire drives to class.

Adobe InDesign and Acrobat for Handouts + Presentations

Stop worrying whether you have compatible software to read or print your documents. Create a biography, artist’s statement, syllabus, grant application or other document that can be printed, e-mailed and/or posted online without losing any of the original formatting. This intensive workshop involves setting up a simple but elegant short document in Adobe InDesign for hand out and electronic distribution as a PDF, as well as an introduction to the principals of portfolio, book, and brochure design for print and web publication. Participants may bring their own short (one-page) texts in any basic word-processing format, or exported as a .rtf file. Images from the Edna Lawrence Nature Lab will be provided for students who do not bring their own digitized images.

Make a Bouncing Ball in Maya

This intensive one-day course introduces Maya, the Academy Award-winning software. Think of Shrek, Monsters, Inc. and The Lord of the Rings trilogy to get an idea of what Maya can do. In this brief start-up course, learn the basic steps necessary to create simple 3-D digital models using Maya’s robust polygonal modeling tools and create your first Maya animation. The final outcome is a 15-second animation that you can bring home. No previous 3-D experience is needed!

Creative Vector Art in Adobe Illustrator

Anchor points, direction lines, segments — does drawing in Illustrator defy spontaneity? Paths can be reshaped, curves and lines can be precisely refined. Once you understand the rules that govern vector art and master a few simple shortcuts, you can draw quickly and, with a little practice, intuitively. Participants in this workshop learn how to draw straight and curved lines using the pen tool, and learn refinement techniques that make drawing in Illustrator fast and fluid and at your control. So join us to learn how to tame the dreaded pen tool and put Illustrator to work for you. Materials for drawing practice will be provided, or students may bring their own scans or sketches.
