my country is ill

digging through my trash, see i sent this diatribe to eric only.
sorry for the mistake eric. i do it constantly.

anyway here's part of it (some has since been resolved)

>In the last 4 yrs the press, media and even the art enclaves have
>been forgiving of a president at war.
>There has been very little concerted effort to critique the current
>government.

the vote of the people (even if we learn in a week, a ton of glitches
swung the election, even that it was above that 2% of the wealthy
bush benefits) says a lot of americans are tuning out the critiques.
the facts are everywhere, every media is inundated with them. either
the people are not interested in media altogether? (could half the
country just not watch the news or read a paper? seems unlikely.)
OR when it gets to the subject of our the administration, they just
tune out. it's a commercial break to them, time to get another beer
from the kitchen.

perhaps the thought that their fine country got obliterated and
usurped by a dictatorship is too traumatic for many to accept.
perhaps having the richest country also the worlds biggest debtors is
a paradox too scary to deal with. maybe it's pride in the toughest
military, that's now just not looking as tough or effective in these
wars.

but whatever the case, as a result, seems many folks brain has to put
up a protective strategy of ignoring. much the way adults who had a
childhood trauma both seek out abusive relationships and no longer
can even recognize when they are in them. The swear they are loved
and protected, despite evidence that seems obvious to others. They
even feel more comfort, normal being abused. evidence and critiques
hurt more, so it's soothing to tune it out.

and that leaves a big emptiness where reason was, like a vacuum,
sucking in faith. begging for a doctrine they can lend their cultish
fanaticism. we all long to believe something and resist believing
that we make entirely random choices. many believe our logic, but if
a person decides logic's inaccessible for any reason, they'll find a
surrogate "family" and trust decisions implicitly (since they feel
unable to make them themselves).

de-programming brain washing is an individual effort. one on one.
maybe no public display or idea is going to heal this? whereas,
interactivity seems like an ideal way to involve them, even on a
subconscious level. even stimulating their human ability to generate
preferences and associations, what they are denying of them selves,
needs exercise. there is no need to guide or instruct, but to let
them develop their own confidence in their own decisions. a blog is
basically group therapy. blogs are good, but there are more way to
invite people to be actors.

ideas?
