Call for Work: BioTech Art

WANTED: BioTech Art

Biotech art is an emerging and diverse field that is still in the process of defining itself. The exhibit “It’s Alive! A Laboratory of BioTech Art” is an investigation of the current intersections of biology, technology, and art. It is scheduled to take place at Montserrat College of Art Gallery, Beverly, MA, November 3rd, 2006- February 3rd, 2007. For more information: www.montserrat.edu

In a world rapidly transformed by science and technology, it is proving difficult to keep up with current developments. With news on genetic engineering regularly making headlines, a growing number of artists have perceived the cultural and aesthetic significance of biotechnology. Artists can play an important role in our understanding of the biotechnological world, making it emotionally and intellectually accessible enough for discussion or debate.

Seeking artists whose work explores and addresses the current discourse surrounding biotechnology. Goal: to increase public awareness of the ways biotechnology is influencing and transforming our society and the public understandings of nature and the human body.

Things to consider:
•Using scientific tools for the sake of art…dangerous?
•Can new methods of technological manipulation be considered a creative act?
•What are the ethical implications of genetic engineering?
•Who can use the available technology and who gets to decide?
•The concept of aesthetics in biotech arts.
•Human rights, bio-terrorism, and environmentalism.

Submit artist statement, resume, and a minimum of 5 images (digital or slides) to:
