Becks: Proud Censors of The Arts

Becks claims on its web-site to be proud sponsors of the arts. On the surface, there may be some substance to this claim, considering their Becks Futures Prize, but underneath the gloss and publicity lies an ugly truth. Becks are also censors of the arts.

A collage I designed for the cover of my forthcoming poetry collection,

ahhh, this is the kind of response i hoped for

i agree with you on one hand, but on the other i'm a
bit pollyannaish and utopian—i believe all artists
(all humans) should use anything they wish (human and
artist are really synonyms)…

so i'm torn—but i do think this kind of thing
highlights these tricky bits of "ownership" in the
arts—who really owns anything? my own stuff grew out
of an appreciation of other artists–and that mingled
with my experience of the world–if i, in trying to
write a line that describes a real scene, use the word
"tree" to describe THAT*, then am i not too in some
way doing what dee is doing here? i do feel like that
sometimes when writing—isn't language a form of
this? any representation at all?

as i am native american i could not agree more with
the noone owns anything really idea
however i would not like it to be ok for someone to
use my image in a f-ed up way that was slanderous
toward me
as i think it is more important to be protected in
such a way i forego my ideals of no ownership
sad that the fear outways the idealism
but i think in our culture - as it is
there is really no choice until a huge evolution it
will be so
fear reigns
