THEATREARTIST manifesto

by Atomic Elroy

NO true art comes with out hard work..either by the Artist or the Viewer

In order to produce theatre that is vital and effective inthe twenty first
century-post-post modern society, we must abandon the current trend of reality based
plays, production techniques, acting and directing styles.

Theatre cannot compete with the reality of Film or television, unless it has a
Broadway size budget, therefore we must form an abstract theatre art based not on
reality but on absolute suspension of reality.

We must engage our spectators to use their imagination in ways they haven't
since they were children.

Theatreart: a hybrid of post modern theatre and performance art in which the artist must be skilled in acting, directing, design, music composition, and writing. Making the need for the collabritive aspect of 20th century theatre obsolete.

Commerical contemporary Theatre tries too hard to compete with Film And Television, as interactive computer entertainment becomes more prevalent, any competition with any of these
things will be impossible.
So instead of trying to make small theatre as real as film and video, lets make small theatre an art form unto itself. Make theatre different. We must establish the abstraction of theatre . Non-reality based theatre. Modern spectators are spoiled, they expect to do no work and recieve all the bennifits. We must re-educate our spectators to expect to work for the results of live performance, instead of it being spoon fed to them. Modern spectators must use their imaginations. We must allow the spectator to enjoy the moment and not be concerned with understanding the"message" Film and video have allowed them to lose touch with imanigation. Causing the audience to fall into a pre-conditioned response trap. the more they have pre-conditioned responces the lazier they become when they are faced with content that challenges them, and therefore they disregarde the entire experiemce as "too hibrow". We must create the illusion of alternative reality and encompass the spectator in
it.
the Director as GOD syndrome must vanish ,along with theatre directors who
need to manipulate every aspect of the actors psyche. We must abolish the methods
of pre-determined response that is killing creative theatre. Allow large Broadway style
theatre to cater to the masses. Re vitalize the small intimate theatre with a shot of
artistic freedom that is self expressive and not self indulgent.

IF we must force our spectators to use their imaginations the artist mus then challenge themselves to create even more engageing theatre experiences.

French actor and surrealist AntoninArtaud insisted that illusion in modern theatre could
be successful only by "the reality of the action" Putting the responsibility on the actor
and director to present reality on stage. This has become a 20th century artistic
standard. We all know Artaud spent some time in an insane aslyum.

a THEATREARTIST must be playwright, actor, designer, director, maker, et al.

say cheese!
