The Pet Goat: New Work By Eryk Salvaggio

In less than two years, the tragedy of September 11th, 2001 has evolved int=
o a political marketing tool. At the heart of this is the recasting of Geor=
ge W Bush as a hero who came through in a time of crisis. In fact, most of =
his actions on 9/11 were confusing if not inexplicable. A central part of t=
he illusion of heroism comes from a comparison of what we had seen and read=
in 2001 and what had evolved into the myth making of a Presidential campai=
gn by the first anniversary of the disaster.

"The Pet Goat" takes images from a video tape which had been edited by admi=
nistration officials to show Bush stalling for two minutes, when in fact, h=
e stalled for five minutes- and reports, even from conservative reporters, =
go so far as to say he spent almost 25 minutes between the first plane hitt=
ing the World Trade Center and his leaving the school. But it is not so sim=
ple as shock. "The Pet Goat" contains text from an essay by Allan Wood and =
Paul Thompson of the Center for Co-Operative Research which looks at the ac=
tual events of the day, as compiled from various (well cited) sources, and =
the story that has been created out of it.

I should be clear that I did not write the text, and I did not find the vid=
eo. This project uses ascii as a new sort of collage of text and image; two=
found objects, on the same subject, are put together in one medium instead=
of two.

I don't know if "The Pet Goat" qualifies as art, or merely political rhetor=
ic; I don't really care.
