Rhizome: My 2 Cents About $5

1. There is a clear distinction between a non-profit organization formed to encourage a new art form and a commercial enterprise. Those who want pay for their artwork or their words should find a commercial enterprise willing to pay.

2. The salaries of Tribe and Galloway are modest.

3. $25,000 of legal fees is modest.

4. A $5 membership fee is a pittance.

5. Academics who reject a personal fee on the ground that it is creating an "elitist" group are dunces and are doing a disservice to their students. Perhaps Rhizome would be well-advised to offer institutional memberships for $1,000 a year (or some appropriately calculated substantoial sum) directly to the relevant departments of academic institutions. Probably the same academics would jump to support such a plan as an enhancement of their prestige within the institution, at no cost to them.

That is the plan. We're calling it the Rhizome Education Network. Any
academics interested in signing up for an institutional membership through
which students and faculty would get free access to Rhizome should contact me.
