Before Wearing: Body, Adornment, Interaction

A RiDE conversation with Kipp Bradford, Lauren Kalman, and Marzena Marzouk

In conjunction with the exhibition “After Wearing: A History of Gestures, Actions and Jewelry,” this discussion will expand upon the question posed by the curators: “What can I do to a piece of jewelry, and what can a piece of jewelry do to me?” Panelists will discuss the ways that various dimensions of design construct the symbolic landscape, shape individual choices, and affect personal and cultural relations. They will further explore the role of art jewelry as a means of generating critical discourse about the relationships between objects, technology, and the body.

Kipp Bradford is an entrepreneur, technology consultant, and educator with a passion for making things. He is the founder or cofounder of start-ups in the fields of transportation, consumer products, HVAC, and medical devices, and holds numerous patents for his inventions.

Lauren Kalman is a visual artist based in Detroit, whose practice is invested in contemporary craft, video, photography and performance. Through her work she investigates beauty, adornment, body image, value, and consumer culture.

Marzena Marzouk is a PhD candidate in Sociology at the City University of New York Graduate Center and an adjunct lecturer at Hunter College. Her research focuses on medicine, science, and technology. She is currently working on her dissertation titled "Cyberpunk Medicine: High-tech Drugs and the Spirit of Nanotechnology."

“After Wearing: A History of Gestures, Actions, and Jewelry,” curated by Damian Skinner and Monica Gaspar, continues through November 14, 2015, and is sponsored in part by the Rotasa Foundation and the Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG).

Lauren Kalman will appear via Skype.

The exhibition and event are free and open to the public.
