THE GREAT ESCAPE

Private View June 13th 6pm onwards, showing to July 14th 2002

Curated by David Chandler of PhotoWorks 'the great escape' is the first major solo exhibition by
Eric Lesdema whose work reflects a restless imagination and testing of definitions. Lesdema regards
himself as a photographer, but not one from today's industrial age, more akin to a 19th Century
pioneer, experimenting and happening on discovery through trial and error and the simple laws of
physics. His new work collapses traditional boundaries between photography and installation, art and
craft, high and low culture and aesthetics and utility. The gallery itself is transformed into a
kind of laboratory in which the viewer is invited to observe experiments. The works reference
science as addressed in children's books, which easily accomodate the naive and the profound, and
place universal scientific laws and accepted knowledge into the realm of the everyday and the
domestic.
