Soon, humans will no longer be uncontested as the sole posessors of the
intangible phenomenon we call consciousness. Even today, we are potentially
surrounded by a wide array of barely-human or even non-human intelligences.
Our society's response to these thinking beings will certainly be debated
scientifically, philosophically, and spiritually, but ultimately we will
make up our minds on an individual emotional level. Our emotional reaction
will in large part be determined by our willingness to allow these strange
new beings into what Jaron Lanier calls our 'circle of empathy.'
Contemplate your place in this universe of consciousness. Build your own
concentric circles of empathy, with yourself at the center, and find your
place in this new world. Your responses may be recorded and used in future
philosophical and legal debates.
