In the midst of practicing the Japanese folk dance known as Kagura in Tono, Japan, the three dancers of EndNeverEnd (Shinichi Iova-Koga, Ishihara Natsumi, and Koyano Tetsuro) commented that the food arriving to the table never seemed to end. From this moment, the name of the group was born and it was decided that local stories––Tono being a place of many legends––would be the meat and source of their performances. EndNeverEnd is joined, in the spirit of a museum exhibition (or a banquet), by inkBoat (founded by Iova-Koga) performing a work in progress called Without Us.

In addition, excerpts from Event with Canfield (adapted by Holley Farmer from Merce Cunningham’s Canfield) and Credo in Us (composed by John Cage in 1944 and choreographed for MCAM by Molissa Fenley in 2011) will also be performed.

Special guests include Mills music faculty member Chris Brown, with Nava Dunkelman, Aprille Tang, Gretchen Jude, Jason Ditzian, Nadia Oka, Dana Iova-Koga, Edward Schocker, Suki O’Kane, Mills Dance and Music students, among others.

Note: These performances are meant to be experienced as a series of events. The audience is encouraged to walk around watch as things unfold. Some chairs will be provided.

This event was planned in conjunction with Experiments in the Fault Zone on view at MCAM from Sep. 25- Dec. 8.
