Now playing at Manhattan's Film Forum is Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering
Kofman's documentary Derrida. Five years in the making, the film covers
French philosopher Jacques Derrida, founder of Deconstruction. Derrida,
Jean-Paul Sartre, and Michel Foucault have been among the most influential
philosophers of the twentieth century, shaping postmodernism and refocusing
consciousness on consciousness. How to depict the text of the philosopher's
work as well as his lifelong political activism were some of the challenges
facing the filmmakers.

Kirby Dick previously directed Sick: The Life And Death Of Bob Flanagan,
Supermasochist, a critically acclaimed documentary that showed how a man
afflicted with cystic fibrosis used his sexuality and sadomasochistic
partnership to make art transcending his physicality. Amy Ziering Kofman
studied with Derrida at Yale, and ten years later approached him about
making a documentary on his life and work. She teamed up with Kirby Dick in
1997, partway through creating the film.
