Thesis Exhibition by Pratt M.F.A. candidate Karla Stingerstein opens Apr 8

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Master of Fine Arts candidate Karla Stingerstein will present "The One | The Other" at Pratt Studios Gallery, 200 Willoughby Ave from April 8 to 12. An opening reception will be held Monday from 6 to 8 pm. In addition, a closing reception will accompany Pratt Open Studios on Friday, April 12 from 6 to 8 pm. All events are free and open to the general public.

In “ The One | The Other” Karla Stingerstein explores form, fabric and furnishings as they relate to the disposal of domestic life. “I am a steward of objects,” her artist statement says.” The ways in which objects enter and exit our lives; how we care for them; how we think about them; how we occupy them and how they occupy us are questions central to my interests.” In this exhibition she takes discarded objects, shrouding them in stitched coverings that translate the original form into echoes of itself. “Because they have been cast off,” Stingerstein says, “they linger in crisis both physically and psychologically. You cannot give life back to those domestic objects, nor can you listen to the stories they have been a part of, nor the memories. It's all gone… irrecoverable. They can only be something else…other life…other object.” Like slipcovers, Stingerstein hand stitches fabric to encase the object. The coverings suggest the object’s potential transformation moving away from its ideal and towards ambiguity. The implication of its new form is other-ness, a subtle re-imagining of self unhindered by the concrete.
