Queers Can't Wait brought together visual voices of eight artists from Montréal and Toronto in celebration of new queers’ urgency to claim their space of identity ambiguity and gender fluidity in the heteronormative-patriarchal world. Featuring various approaches of (re)enactment, stop motion, documentary convention, media poetry, hand drawn animation, video diary, voice-over narration and music video, this work covers a large spectrum of previously undisclosed queer realm, articulating physical space, ideological position as well as psychological and spiritual territory. Despite the richness of free association, fantasy and scripting in some of the narratives, these works that speak of personal history and self-discovery, queer love, trauma, mourning, social culture, gender politics and alternative ways of living are far from pure fiction – the faeries are real; the furries are real. They present an abundance of sentiments towards personal issues that are intrinsically political with such genuineness, creating empathy while initiating open space to be filled with new imaginaries informed by individual experiences and cultural diversity.
