Deadline - Call for Panelist - FATE Conference

Refocusing the Image within Photography and New Media Arts

More than 150 years ago, Paul Delaroche declared that the birth of photography heralded the “death of painting”. In the mid 1950s, W.J. Mitchell's The Reconfigured Eye, announced the death of photography after the first digital image was encoded with a scanner. How has our thinking about the still photographic image altered-within our practice and pedagogy– since the development of New Media Arts? Do Photography and New Media need to be as delineated as Painting and Photography? How will our relationship to images change the disciplines we teach and the work we make? Are their goals interrelated or should we consider them as two entirely different disciplines with image-makers who have distinctly different goals and working methods?

This panel seeks participation from artists, educators and theorists whose pedagogical and artistic paths continue to evolve as the process of Photography moves from analog to digital. It is anticipated that each panel member will deliver their perspectives to differentiate leading arguments about the future of photography in relation to New Media. This panel wishes to examine the goals of photographers and New Media artists, to question their changing relationship to image and to ask how we can develop our individual practice and teaching as the nature of images continues to change. How will our ideas of image as record alter and how will we adapt to new methods of representing space, time and ourselves?

Foundations in Art: Theory and Education (FATE) is a national organization dedicated to the promotion of excellence in the development and teaching of college-level foundation courses in both studio and art history.
