Hacktivists or Cyberterrorists?

The Changing Media Discourse on Hacking by Sandor Vegh

This paper scrutinizes the language of government reports and news media
sources to shed light on their role in forming a negative image of politically
motivated hacking in general, and online political activism, in particular. It
is argued that the mass media's portrayal of hacking conveniently fits the
elite's strategy to form a popular consensus in a way that supports the elite's
crusade under different pretexts to eradicate hacking, an activity that may
potentially threaten the dominant order.

Fuck all hackers! They are engaged in totally malicious behavior that is
utterly devoid of value to anybody. If you think it is fun to glamorize
these scumsucking bums, just wait until you lose a few bucks to them because
of a disabled server or something, and then you will change your mind. As
for them having any kind of political consciousness, what a joke! They
destroy people's lives, good and bad alike, simply because it gets them off.
Fuck all hackers! They are worse than masturbating fleas!

I write this not as part of any elite or politically reactionary force in
society, but because I was the innocent victim of one of these shits. Fuck
all hackers, fuck them all!

No I have not confused anything, and your comparison with humans (or humanZ,
whatever they are) is preposterous. Care to elaborate?

"No longer a Wallflower"

Note: I am humbled to have been such a twit with my "dancecard" thanks anyone
that was encouraging for something terrible just happened…Read please?

Well, this pithy arguing by the "antihacktivist" poster has been ECLIPSED I
should say by the front page news (just happened) about terrorist horror
visited upon our Australian, British, and German brethren in Bali.

I am SO SORRY for those that suffer so for the politics that are IGNORING the
Al Quaeda nest that has been stirred up in favour of a war with Iraq only for
THESE are apparently; these innocent elitist disco revellers our "frontline
army" and THAT is NOT FAIR!!

These civilian casualities are far from the first or last victims of this
ongoing worldwide war cry which may jeopardize more lives as time passes.
That said, let's please think of those in Australia, England, Germany and the
other countries (Sweden) and nationalities "Indonesian" experiencing a sad
taste of what we in New York had an overabundant supply of just over a year
ago today.

How scary and how sad and the worst of it is –I lived in London, I always
feel a chill when something of this nature happens, though I doubt my friends
in particular were in Bali, many world travellers were.

Then in the US CNN I had to DIG into the World section to find the US CNN
story in it's opening PARA not EVEN aknowledging the races of those lost in
this debacle, nor focussing on them really but on the "structural damage to
Balinese buildings" and fixating on the "type of bomb" steering a course
eventually through "grieving relatives" which I hope can be compared to the
raw nerve exposed in the BBC who interviewed victim/survivors on their way to
the hospital and are acting (appropriately I think) as though it is STILL
HAPPENING. For the sufferers and victimss of this disaster it IS!!!

The BBC has painted a picture we in NYC can understand of people who have
FLED their hotels (for fear of further attacks and reprisals) and now dot the
Balinese beaches as European refugees along with the main group of
Australians bivouacing along the shore…..

"Let me clear my throat" (beastie boys)

Perhaps the powers that be fear a "detour" should the mounting toll of
civilian casualties bring our allies to a standstill or remove the "American
only" rictus and "special relationship" of Israelis and Americans to
"victimization" by Pan-Arabism. I find it odd and so am conjecturing….as
the US is almost really not giving the limelight over to a STRICKEN PEOPLE we
NOW OWE our fullest and utmost care and attention and heartfelt empathy
having also grieved for our own recent casualties. We need to be
proportionate however in our media reporting!

What is WITH our news sources lately. I am sorry I do not have both URL's I
will post an excerpt now I feel reflects properly on the magnitude of this
horror/debacle from the BBC (I was looking at the site as I trust BBC more
some days but mostly as I had been considering an internship at some future
time; tired of navel gazing, so sad at now what I see!!!) which leaves me
aghast at the CNN reporting. Yes, it only just happened but how many
government agencies must CLEAR the fact that the Al Quaeda are already being
blamed by the BBC while CNN avoids
a) personifying the dead
b) personifying the living
c) personifying at all!
d) personifying the organization (responsible) and naming them or offering,
least, educated guesses…

Instead we have a CNN News Source that speaks in terms of building damages
and the explosive devices used in the mission….in other words the THINGS
AROUND the "human stories." God forbid we should stop worrying about our
"domestic welfare" via the Sniper I suppose.

We NEED a more WORDLY and INTERNATIONAL face on an INTERNATIONAL problem
which is why I am so troubled by US unilateralism (personally) when we HAVE a
UN (really)! CNN is most hopped up on the front page on sniper details and
our own media chose not to display this disaster front and center and I for
one am outraged! How much more do we need to go through to support "red
dragon" at the box office?? I mean, a serial killer has apparently become
the national anti-hero displacing Osama while the "terrorism" goes on playing
in the background like a musical score.

Peace,

'Terror blast' hits Bali resort

The club was still burning hours later

A huge explosion on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali has killed at least
150 people in a crowded nightclub in the resort of Kuta.

There are charred and mangled bodies everywhere, it is unbelievable

French eyewitness Cyril Terrien

Hospital officials estimate that 75% of the dead were foreigners, among them
Australians, Britons and Germans, with at least another 150 reported injured.

A doctor said many of the bodies brought into hospitals around the island's
capital Denpasar were too charred to be identified.

Alexander Downer: Terrorism "almost certain"

"This is the worst act of terror in Indonesia's history," said the country's
police chief General Da'i Bachtiar, although he did not speculate about who
might be responsible.

The US embassy in Jakarta had recently issued warnings of possible attacks by
Islamic militants linked to al-Qaeda.

Australia's foreign minister said he was "almost certain" that it was
terrorist attack.

"It's hard to believe there could be any other explanation for it." said
Alexander Downer.

Building ablaze

There were reportedly two explosions at 2330 (1530GMT) on Saturday outside
the Sari Club, a nightspot popular with Western tourists in Kuta.

Hospitals have been overwhelmed by the number of injured

The area was crowded with people out on a Saturday evening.

One survivor said there were two blasts, the first relatively small but the
second so powerful that it brought the building down.

Its thatched roof and wooden walls were set on fire. The blaze spread to a
second bar opposite and flames were still raging in both buildings several
hours afterwards.

General Bachtiar said the explosion had left a deep crater in the ground.

A third explosion went off almost simultaneously near the office of the
American honorary consul in a nearby town, but no one was injured.

Chaos and damage

Bali is a popular holiday resort with Western tourists.

I am going to the airport, I want to take the first flight out

Karim Ansel
French tourist British tourist Matt Noyce, from London, was in the bar of the
Sari Club when there was a massive blast.

"There was just complete panic in the bar with lots of people diving to the
door trying to scramble over each other," he told the BBC.

"Outside it was awful, it was like a scene you'd see from Vietnam. There were
bodies everywhere."

Over 100 people were injured by the blast

Mr Noyce, who helped move the severely injured away from the fires which
started after the explosion, said the street had been busy with tourists and
locals.

Another eyewitness, French photographer Cyril Terrien, said he had "never
seen such an appalling thing".

"There are charred and mangled bodies everywhere, it is unbelievable," he
added.

Some tourists fled their hotels and camped out on local beaches.

Many are now starting to leave the resort.

"I am going to the airport, I want to take the first flight out," said Karim
Ansel, a Parisian tourist.

Embassy worries

The US embassy in Jakarta has issued a series of warnings in recent weeks
that its nationals could be targeted by Islamic militants linked to the
al-Qaeda terror group.

The embassy itself closed for several days last month after intelligence
reports indicated militant groups were planning car bomb attacks.

Indonesian officials have in the past denied that militants linked to
al-Qaeda are active in the country.
