Three Ideas Which Failed To Elicit Responses on Thingist

1.
Immediately, I would establish an advertising company for net.art, with
a variety of advertisements featuring websites on placards on trains,
city buses, supermarket grocery carts, etc etc etc, with urls to those
sites. I probably wouldn't need that much money. If we had any more, we
could do television ads. And of course we would pay for the art, in the
same way that advertisers typically pay a design agency, except these
"ad" spaces would be promoting nothing but the sites for the people
creating the "ads" themselves.

2.
The purchase of a large space in a downtown area of a small but
art-friendly city, filled with fifteen, 40 inch flat panel LCD monitors
with mouse pads and keyboards on white stands with high speed internet
access. Easy. Extremely easy and apparently already been done, except I
don't know anyone who has done a show at one of these places?

3.
Automatic Teller Machines, with an interface open-sourced for digital
artists, which would actually dispense cash, just like a regular ATM-
with an added $1.00 service charge for each transaction going to the
artist whose interface was used [either a start up screen with choices,
or set up in a random fashion, so that participating artists could
receive monthly checks after participating just once.] Perhaps
eventually a network of these ATM's could be established in museums and
galleries internationally. Perhaps we could invite local graffiti
artists to work on the exteriors of these machines as well. Or not.

I know none of these are sustainable but who cares, beauty is not
sustainable either and no one worries about that.

I'll have to think about these, but glad to see some creative business in the
air. As for #3, it immediately strikes me that while travelling this summer I
noticed that Gas Pumps now have little color screens with digital commercials,
so why not add them into the mix. Couple cents extra per gallon is not a small
price to pay to spread net.art is it?

not sustainable? Why not? If not sustainable at least
"doable" You, Eryk, can live your dreams, here is how:

Step 1.

How about renting a space(do you live in Boston?)or
setting up a living place that you can cut off a
exhibition space. Call it "Salsa Bomb" or "One38".
Forget the the flat screens for now and use computer
stations (beg , borrow or steal…no, on second
thought, don't steal, find some old gear or talk to
arts orgs about giving you old stuff or just ask -
Anyway: "Build it and they will come:just do it:bla
bla bla…" Set up some gallery hours (Sat. Sun. and
another day if you can swing it) Ask in some artists,
print some cards and have a show. If I can do it you
can. (yeah, I ran a 500 square foot space in NYC on
the lower east side for a year until my gallery
partner got bored and closed it to use as his
studio…that fuckin' dick…but I did get to do a
cool show with the McCoys and Cary Peppermint before
it went down in flames)

Step 2

Use space to start net. art ad agency but think
smaller. Posters, Stickers, Side projection out your
front window at night, Split 7 inches with other like
minded bands (Oh, sorry, I mean exchange projects with
other alt. art spaces), and don't forget the WWW.

Step 3,

> Automatic Teller Machines, with an interface
> open-sourced for digital
> artists,

There is a gallery (Another 500 sf space on the Lower
East Side)in NYC that is called ATM. They have a small

street ATM built into the front of the space. On the
first screen it says something like "Welcome to The
ATM Gallery, Please Insert Card". For Salsa Bomb
Space, you can have your ATM first screen say things
like "For a Good Time, http://mteww.com or Just Insert
Your Dam Card"

Yes Mr. Salvaggio, all your dreams can come true…

Say for example in Baton Rouge, I think that you could even get access to a
space that's not being used for utilities for a period of time (like, 3-6
months). They could use it as a write-off. Do the Andy Hardy thing; see if
local computer dealers will give you equipment for promotional
consideration. Set up hours, invite pals, and go!

Why just net.art? Why not other forms of tech art as well? Telepresence?
Cybrids?

Yes, I like this. Actually, it woudl be interesting to get a couple ATM's
and split the profits.
