PRESENCE / ABSENCE explores the work of four
artists who use digital media to transform the content and experience of
their work.
When art is an object in front of the viewer, the object is the
art. When presented digitally, the focus of art is shifted from the
physical object to flickering pixels that disappear with the click of a
mouse. With the physical object removed, the art becomes - simply and
appropriately - the viewer's experience. This is as it should be in our
contemporary, high-speed, high-definition world.
ILLUSION, Nicholas Dertien
Translated into digital photographic media, Dertien's clear
blown-glass sculptural torsos begin an eery journey of shifting
reflections.
SPEAKING OF THINGS, Marcy B Freedman
Freedman uses remote video conferencing to facilitate realtime
interaction with her viewers, while challenging them to contemplate the
relevance of stories to our experience of reality.
TRACED CONNECTIONS, Francesca Samsel
Samsel transforms her prints and drawings into a flux of imagery,
tracing of the associative connections that reflect her experience of
these tumultuous times.
PRESENCE, Sally Weber
Weber, a hologram artist, explores subtle light transformations that are experienced digitally in 3D.
