Carnegie Mellon University is inviting applications for the position of Head of the School of Art.

The ideal candidate will bring visionary thinking and the highest standards of creative and scholarly excellence to the position. Evidence of professional and progressive leadership within an institution or organization, excellent management and mentoring skills, and the proven ability to gain and manage resources is essential. These attributes may be demonstrated through a track record as an inspired artist, practitioner, teacher, researcher, and/or administrator, with the ability to build and contribute to a racially and culturally diverse faculty, staff and student body. The individual should have potential for teaching, research and professional activities at the rank of Tenured Full Professor.
The person filling this position must be able to mentor and work effectively with a wide range of people who work across a variety of aesthetic premises with diverse tools and processes. The SOA community currently includes: 23 FT and 4-7 PT faculty, 9 FT staff, 18 graduate and 187 undergraduate students (75% BFA and 25% BXA), alumni, donors, university leaders, parents and friends of the University. The Head must be an enthusiastic representative and advocate of the School of Art, with potential for developing growing connections between art and technology with entities in and outside of the university. Candidates should have an inspirational and aspirational approach to both practice and research and to the education of diverse artists assuming creative and critical stances within the world. The position requires effective decision-making, consultative problem solving, creative management, cultivating new donors and economic resources, embracing new technologies, and a high level of energy, dedication, and passion for art.

The School of Art offers a BFA and MFA in Art as well as the BHA (Bachelor of Humanities and Arts), BSA (Bachelor of Science & Arts), and BCSA (Bachelor of Computer Science and Arts). We have strong relationships across the university and within the College of Fine Arts (CFA), which was founded in 1914 as the first comprehensive school of the arts in the United States. CFA includes the distinguished Schools of Art, Architecture, Design, Drama and Music and associated centers and programs. These include the Center for the Arts in Society, Entertainment Technology Center, Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry, Center for Building Performance and Diagnostics, Remaking Cities Institute, and Miller Gallery as well as the BXA Inter-College Degree and Creative Enterprise Management Programs.
