FULL-TIME FACULTY POSITION IN ART THERAPY

The Master of Arts in Art Therapy program of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) invites applications for a full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty position, beginning August 2016. Rank and salary are commensurate with professional experience, teaching, and current professional status.

PROGRAM PROFILE
SAIC’s 60-credit Master of Arts in Art Therapy Program is focused on providing a comprehensive education that emphasizes development of the artist/art therapist, prepares graduates to work in a variety of settings, and fosters critical engagement within social and cultural contexts. The program was established in 1981 and has been approved by the American Art Therapy Association since 1989. The School of the Art Institute of Chicago has operated for over 150 years as a professional school of art and design connected to a world-class art museum.

One of 23 academic, studio, and design departments at the School, the Master of Arts in Art Therapy is in transition from a 2-year to a 3-year model. The program currently has 3 full-time and 20 part-time faculty who offer 60 courses each year, including extensive supervised fieldwork experiences. RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will be an active participant in the department, with responsibilities that include teaching, advising, and directing; contributing to the program and School through administrative duties and service; and ongoing engagement in scholarly, creative, and professional activities.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required: Substantial human service experience as an art therapist; demonstrated scholarly, studio, and professional engagement; doctoral degree; ATR-BC. Prior teaching, supervisory, and administrative experience preferred.

In addition to a solid grounding in direct art therapy practice, the ideal candidate will demonstrate expertise as evidenced by research, scholarly writing, and/or art practice. Key areas of interest to the department include:

• commitment to social justice
• theories of difference, identity, and diversity
• contemporary art theory and practice,
• innovative forms of culturally relevant art therapy education
• interdisciplinary approaches to art therapy practice and scholarship
• working collaboratively across disciplines

The ideal candidate also will contribute to the diversity of the School by bringing a perspective, way of thinking, and/or unique set of experiences that expands the intellectual conversation of the field.
