ABOUT

Playing Defense is a collaborative performance/video, between media artist
Mandy Morrison and break dance collective, NYCArts Cypher, (a Staten Island organization, which provides dance and graffiti-art facilities to inner-city youth).

In this initial presentation Morrison works with Cypher exploring and challenging the spatial geometries of a military fortress by pitting the athletic rigor of break dance against the sacrificial and submissive demands of military life. The video was shot on location at the historical fortification, Fort Jay on Governor's Island.

The participating youth of NYCArts Cypher are close in age to enlisted service personnel who continue to serve on the front lines of our nation's military.

A National Park, Fort Jay, is a historical landmark, which for more than two centuries, was one of several military fortresses of New York Harbor that defended interests of trade and commerce in the United States.

This project is made possible by a DCA Premier Grant through support from the Council on the Arts and Humanities for Staten Island, with public funding from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
