L@TE: Friday Nights @ BAM/PFA (Laetitia Sonami and Vorticella)

Laetitia Sonami and Vorticella
May 7, 7:30 p.m.

Composer, performer, and sound installation artist Laetitia Sonami was born in France and settled in the United States in 1975 to pursue her interest in electronic music. Her sound installations combine audio and kinetic elements, and for this evening she will use cardboard tubes discovered at a construction site. The New York Times described her as “a human antenna searching the air for sounds, like a dancer focused on her hands, or like a deity summoning earth-shaking rumbles with a brusque gesture.” Vorticella is named after inverted bell-shaped ciliates. Vorticella’s members are Krystina Bobrowski (bull kelp horns, leaf speakers, Gliss Glass, and other instruments), cellist Erin Espeland, Brenda Hutchinson (Long Tube), and drummer/percussionist Karen Stackpole.

Preceded at 6 p.m. by one of our favorite DJs spinning in the lobby, where wine and beer will be available for purchase.

General admission to the BAM galleries is just $5 after 5 p.m. Show your ticket for a same-day PFA screening or gallery visit and get in free. Admission is always free for BAM/PFA members and UC Berkeley students, faculty, and staff.
