"…exhilarating, funny, challenging, complex, beautiful. Un-conventional and experimental, just the way modern dance should be." - Yelp

"Unfettered from the sense that there was something "to get," the viewer's mind was free to drift among associations, the dancers evoking now a flock of birds, now an ocean current, now a windstorm gathering force." - Bonner Odell, IN DANCE

DOUBLE VISION will present the world premiere of Hysteresis, an evening-length dance showcasing choreography by Pauline Jennings, electronic sound by Sean Clute, lighting by Ben Coolik and costume design by Andrea Campbell. Hysteresis features virtuosic and poly-rhythmic movement patterns, contrapuntal groupings and moments of live-triggered responses. Free from traditional structures and narratives, the dance evokes an abstract dreamscape rich in complex shapes, relationships and points of meditation for the audience.

Hysteresis was informed by a residency in Vienna, Austria, at the Museumsquartier. The work is a metaphor for the state of being alien or observing that which is alien to oneself. The audience is presented with unknown customs, languages, and symbols through abstraction of image and sound. As the observer experiences what is at first deemed noise, clear relationships and patterns begin to emerge and understanding can occur. Noise gives way to an idea and the idea leads to a certain comfort in this incessantly uncertain world.

Performances by Blaine Bookey, Emily Gorman, Wendy Marinaccio, Jennifer Mellorand Cecelia Peterson.

Hysteresis was made possible through generous private donations, CounterPULSE's fiscal sponsor program, The Garage's RAW Program and grants from the Zellerbach Family Foundation and William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

DOUBLE VISION (www.double-vision.biz), creates contemporary performances for dance, music, video and interactive technology. At the heart of our work is a need to experiment and seek meaning in the ever-changing landscape of contemporary culture. The result is a body of work that is complex, humorous, quirky and continuously evolving. Led by Pauline Jennings and Sean Clute, DOUBLE VISION recently celebrated their first five years with two ambitious tours. First, the company produced a 5-week, 17-city tour of the United States and then participated in a 2-month residency at the Museums Quartier in Vienna, Austria with additional performances in Prague, Zurich and Pecs.
