The Fashion Design department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago seeks innovative, accomplished fashion designers and artists/practitioners with proficiency in the area of fashion design to advance its innovative curriculum that teaches students to make substantive contributions in the world of fashion and art.

The ideal candidate will teach fashion design and construction courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, mentor students in conceptual and technical development, support professional practice opportunities, participate in year-end student shows and exhibitions, and support the evolution of the department through service. The full-time tenured or tenure-track position begins August 2015.

About the Department

The Fashion Design department, one of 23 departments at the school, is chaired by one of three full-time faculty, 2 full-time visiting artists, and 20 part-time faculty that offer 60 undergraduate courses in spacious, state of the art classrooms. The department also supports a one-year Post-Baccalaureate Certificate and a two-year Master of Design in Fashion, Body, and Garment degree with 30 dedicated students.

Sequential comprehensive design courses, seminars, studies in design history and theory, and electives from across the school support the development of student work.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will lead students in conceptual development, advance knowledge in new technologies in fashion construction and design imagery through seminars, studios, and tutorials.

All full-time faculty support the department through curricular development, administrative roles, student recruitment, and participation in the year-end runway shows. At some point in their careers, full-time faculty will likely serve a rotation as the department chair, and as such will provide leadership and direction to the curriculum and the department. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to an active professional studio practice and outstanding teaching.

Qualifications

A minimum of a bachelor's degree and three or more years teaching at the college-level is required; master-level degree and fashion industry experience preferred.

The ideal candidate has advanced studies in fashion and a global understanding of fashion design and its context in contemporary culture. An interdisciplinary approach to art and design is preferred.

Rank and salary are competitive with peer institutions, and are commensurate with quality of scholarship or practice, extent of teaching experience, and current professional standing.
