Argument

We live in partitioned times, and we interact daily with databases which re-assemble fragments of text, sound and images. These elements are at our fingertips, and can eventually concern our intimacy and a collective perspective of mediatic re-activation. As artists nowadays use these ressources, as they mix and sample to shape new significations, their practices fall in the continuity of an appropriation tradition we inherited from the 20th century avant-gardes.

The new media have brought a new insight on the time-based processes of creation, as well as space-based processes were preponderant for the previous generations of artists. Today magic lanterns have been replaced by digital practices investing performative actions and live visual works. Visual performers and VJays use transdisciplinar approaches and sampling techniques in various ways, working with musicians, dancers, interactive devices and generative softwares in order to create a lively experience. These works could be categorized along some formulas used by the artists themselves : visual performances, VJ sets, live cinema, video theaters, video dance, installation, live mapping, which all interrogate the aesthetics of hybridation and intermedial forms.

One of the goals of this symposium will thus be to gather researchers, curators and artists who share interests in the notion of audiovisual performance. By questioning our relationship to the media and to the aesthetics of live creation and appropriation, we would like to bring highlights on the elusive border between new media, performance studies, visual arts and performing arts the Vjays and audiovisual performers have contributed to shape.

The following list of themes could be developed :

- Sampling as a cultural form
- Live mixing and visual activism
- Collaborative and interdisciplinary aspects on stage
- Media archeology and the machinery of reality
- Semi-autonomous forms
- Flux and flow, digital temporalities in live practices
- Hardware and software, the evolution of apparatus and devices

Independent scholars, curators and artists are encouraged to send their proposals. Papers should be twenty minutes in length, and can be delivered in French or English.
