CalArts Art and Technology Program

The Art and Technology Program in the School of Art at the The California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) is currently accepting applications for its two year Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) degree. The Art and Technology Program is defined by trans-disciplinary practices that question contemporary culture through art, media, technology, performance and social participation.

We provide a project based curriculum and a faculty of full time artists who are dedicated to helping students realize new technical and creative competencies while enhancing their critical thinking skills. It is a pedagogy that is specifically designed to expand or transform one's art practice through creative research.

The program includes a collaborative workspace that contains individual studios, access to digital media and fabrication facilities, creative research workshops and shared classes throughout the CalArts campus.

The curriculum encompasses group critiques, technical and critical seminars, independent studies, classes in cultural theory and a strong emphasis on individual mentoring. Each student meets frequently with their mentor for feedback and evaluation during their two years of study. In addition to discussion of the student's work, our rigorous critiques and seminars interrogate current social, political and aesthetic issues that inhabit the intersections of culture, art and technology.

Recent graduates have produced work resulting in projects such as object based media, digital video installation, interactive interventions, performance based media, kinetic sculpture, computer generated media and socially engaged educational initiatives.
