Mappathon teaches participants the latest technology for mapping video projections on physical surfaces, moving away from the traditional confines of the screen to sculptures and building facades. The goal of the workshop is to create several projection mapping installations in REVERSE Space, where the participants create content for complex surfaces.
Participants will learn the tools to work in with these forms, and work on the process of collaborative design. The primary tool taught in the workshop is the software package MadMapper. MadMapper has greatly simplified the process of working with this technique of video projection. Used in conjunction with video software like Modul8, Quartz Composer,
Processing, or Max/MSP/Jitter; MadMapper enables designers and artists to realize their ideas without getting bogged down in technical details.
Ten artists selected from an open call will create content for mapping onto predetermined, large objects. They will work together in teams of two, each creating the content for a piece that will incorporate multiple surfaces and shapes. At the end of the workshop, the gallery will be open to the public for a presentation of the work. Selected participants will be given a fully functional, time limited, version of MadMapper & Modul8. This should be installed and activated prior to the beginning of the workshop. Food and beverages will be provided during the workshop.
Ten artists will be selected from an open call. Selections will be made based on their previous work and presentation skills within the realm of live visual creation.
Participants should posses a basic understanding of digital video tools and content creation. For interactive elements, it is strongly suggested that participants be familiar with a real time video compositing software or a programming environment.

- Submit in less than 500 words a statement: describe your work, the tools you use, and how projection mapping will fit into your practice in the future.
- Answer the following question as truthfully as you can: “If you were an Olympic Sport (real or imagined), which would you be, and why?”
- Provide two work samples, with no more than two images or one short (< 2 minute) video for each project with a brief description of the work. (Images should be 1MB max each and you should provide a link on youtube or vimeo for the video examples)
- A $20 application fee (please note: if accepted, this will be deducted from the total cost) payable online at reversespace.org. Please send a copy of the paypal receipt.

CHiKA — She is an interactive visual artist with the international VJ background and experimental music scene and an educator. Her visual art work vary from minimalist geometric patterns to unique compositions overflowing with a variety of forms and color. Her work has been shown at The Museum of Modern Art, American Museum of Natural History, The Museum of Arts and Design, The Hammer Museum, San Francisco Art Institute, Geneva Centre de Art Contemporain, Matadero Madrid, Theatre Maisonneuve, Biennial in Venezuel, New York University, Cooper Union, University of Pennsylvania, The University of Wisconsin-Madison, The Issue Project Room, Galapagos Art Space, Harvest Works, Eyebeam, The Front Room Gallery, The Ise Gallery, Mutek, Mapping Festival, Decibel Festival, and Ingenuity Festival.
Scott Fitzgerald — Scott is a media artist and educator who uses technology as a tool for teaching and artistic exploration. He has run numerous workshops and taught classes in Europe and the US on physical computing, Max/MSP/Jitter, interactive architectural lighting, interactive video, and interactive sound. His work has been shown and performed in Asia, Europe, and the US; and featured by PBS and in a number of books andarticles.
