[text=left]Assistant Professor in Spatial Dynamics (Full-time)
Division of Foundation Studies
Rhode Island School of Design[/text]
The Division of Foundation Studies, Rhode Island School of Design seeks an Assistant Professor in Spatial Dynamics (full-time), with appointment to begin fall 2013.
Spatial Dynamics is one of three programs (Spatial Dynamics, Drawing and Design) comprising the studio curriculum for all first year undergraduate students at RISD. Each studio class meets for one full day a week, in sections of approximately 20 students, with section groups preserved across programs. Faculty in Foundation Studies teach four courses a year, advise students, participate in curriculum development, serve on college committees, and maintain active professional practices.
In the Spatial Dynamics studio, students investigate the structure of form and the shaping of space by exploring and expressing relationships between space, time, and objects. Through designed sets of assignments, with faculty and peer critique, students are encouraged to think deductively and intuitively, and to investigate the potential of a diverse range of materials.
The Division is open to a radically diverse range of approaches to Spatial Dynamics—Western and/or non-Western, studio-based and/or post-studio, traditional and/or new media, classical and/or experimental, fine art and/or design. It is essential that candidates have a distinctive vision and pedagogical approach, and are prepared to teach Spatial Dynamics as a vital experience for a range of disciplines. Designers and artists from all disciplines are encouraged to apply.
Candidates should have a terminal Master’s degree, or equivalent, a minimum of two years teaching experience at the college level (preferred), and evidence of significant and ongoing professional achievement. Applications, submitted online at www.risd.edu/jobs, should include a letter of intent, statement of teaching philosophy, curriculum vitae, the names and contact information for three references, and up to 20 images each of recent professional and student work.
Review of applications begins immediately, and all completed applications received by January 7, 2013 are assured consideration.
