Call For Artists -- Memory Project

CALL FOR ARTIST PROPOSALS

Memory Project
Salina Art Center
Salina, Kansas

February 14-May 16, 2004

The Salina Art Center is requesting proposals from artists who are investigating the topic of memory. This project is intended to create lively and meaningful exchanges among art, artists, and the community of Salina, Kansas. While the goals of the project will become more specific as proposals are reviewed and considered in light of artistic questions and concerns, the Art Center hopes to activate a conversation about issues of art and memory in contemporary life. The primary venue for projects will be the galleries of the Salina Art Center.

The Memory Project hopes to encourage viewers to negotiate intimate and collective aspects of memory, to foster awareness of how objects and materials summon memories, and to open dimensions of evidence and definitions of truth. Artists may either submit a work in progress, or suggest a project that grows from this invitation.

The Memory Project is a collaboration by a regional group of artists and thinkers who have been meeting to shape its form and content. This group has formulated questions to consider, however artist proposals need not be limited to those listed below:

What are the tensions between memory and truth?
What are the tensions between remembering and forgetting?
How do we proceed individually and culturally when we do not agree upon versions of the truth?
How do the senses reconstitute and evoke memory?
Memory is not innocent
