Chicago artist Chris Reilly brings the heat with a collection of projects based on political histories of control, information and death.

The centerpiece of the exhibit is a full-sized, fully operational recreation of a guillotine, implemented with allegiance to contemporary ideals of eco-friendly sustainability. A windmill mounted out of the gallery window provides power to ratchet the guillotine blade into place, and release it automatically.

To compliment this artifact of equal-rights execution, Reilly has included an automatic “text-redacter,” which scans, censors and shreds documents in real time. Also featured in the show is a video piece interpreting the State of the Union address as an abstracted video and light event, and several smaller pieces that focus on Reilly’s interest in paradoxical politics and guilt.
