X-com ist ein auditives Mapping von Johannesburg, das im Zuge des Afrika-Aufenthaltes von MACHFELD (aka Michael Mastrototaro & Sabine Maier) 2007 entstand. Gemeinsam mit den StudentInnen der Cityvarsity Johannesburg und StudentInnen der University of Witwatersrand Johannesburg begab man sich auf eine Spurensuche, deren Ziel das Erfassen der multikulturellen Identifikation Johannesburgs war. Untersucht wurde unter anderem, inwieweit Klangbilder den jeweiligen kulturellen Gegebenheiten unterliegen.

Südafrika, ein Land in dem unterschiedlichste Kulturen aufeinander treffen und das nach langen Jahren der Apartheid einen neuen kulturellen Weg versucht, ist Ausgangspunkt dieses Projektes.

Wenn Kultur, nach Bolten (1997), als Orientierungssystem „den kommunikativen Handlungszusammenhang einer bestimmten Lebenswelt auf der Grundlage bestimmter tradierter Wissensvorräte bezeichnet“, kann Interkulturalität per Definition nur das „Dazwischen“, die Beziehung von in dieser Weise unterschiedenen Lebenswelten, bezeichnen. Dabei unterscheidet Bolten zwischen dem Synergiemodell und dem Synthesemodell der interkulturellen Kommunikation. Beim Synthesemodell handelt es sich um „das Zusammenfügen zweier Größen (These/Antithese) zu einer dritten (Synthese) und zweier Zusammengefügten weiter zu einer neuen dritten“ usw., wobei eine normative Theorie, die unabhängig vom kulturellen Umfeld einsetzbar sei, geschaffen werden könnte. Mit der Synergie wird „das kontinuierliche Erzeugen eines Handlungszusammenhangs, in dem gleichsam die Energiepotenziale der fremdkulturellen Kommunikationspartner zusammenfließen“ (Bolten, 1997) bezeichnet. Aufgrund der beiden Modelle, Synthese und Synergie, bildet sich die Theorie der transkulturellen Kommunikation, die sich als Spezialfall interkultureller Kommunikation darstellt. Bei der transkulturellen Kommunikation handelt es sich um die Kommunikation, die dadurch entstehen kann, Kulturen und Menschen zu integrieren und sie in komplementäre Teile eines integralen Ganzen zu transformieren.

In Zeiten der globalen Vernetzung nutzen MACHFELD analoge (alte) wie digitale (neue) Aufzeichnungsgeräte um einen auditiven Kommunikations-Klangraum als Crosskontinentalen Subraum in Form einer Kunstradiosendung zu erarbeiten.

„X-com“ is an acoustic map of Johannesburg that was developed by MACHFELD (aka Michael Mastrototaro & Sabine Maier) during their stay in South Africa in 2007. Together with students of the Cityvarsity Johannesburg and of University of Wittwatersrand Johannesburg, the artists explored the multicultural identification of the city of Johannesburg. An approach was to investigate in how far sounds are subject to cultural conditions.

MACHFELD apply old, analogue recording devices as well as new, digital ones in order to develop a cross-continental space of communication for their piece.
