New content now online @ The Unstitute

The Unstitute is proud to present two new participants who are helping to eek out the underground territories of The Unstitute…

This month in the Projection Room:

Stephen Broomer
'Christ Church - Saint James'

15th September - 15th October

The Unstitute continues to offer its curated monthly screening of open-submission works in video. This month, we are pleased to introduce Stephen Broomer, who was one of our earliest candidates in the history of these screenings. We are very pleased to have the opportunity to screen this wonderful short video.

"In the spring of 1998, Christ Church – Saint James, an historic black church in Toronto’s Little Italy, was destroyed by arson. All that remained were walls and a pit, and over subsequent years, the site was overtaken with graffiti. This film has taken on the layered form of the site itself, the space and its surfaces becoming tangled and multiple, the grid of a stone-filled window giving geometric form to simultaneously occurring images of concrete, nature, waste, paint, and sky."

New contributor to [dis]Corporate Bodies:

Anna FC Smith
'Against the Dark'

'Against The Dark' uses contemporary footage of residual British customs from the period of Samhain (the Celtic term for the Autumn and Winter period). The festivities include multiple Bonfire Nights, Halloween, Allendale Tar Barrelling and a number of mumming plays. These rituals are residual acts of ancient folk rites performed to fight back against the literal darkness of the winter and the perceived dark evils thought to rise at that turning point of the year. The mass of these acts demonstrates the audacity and impudence of humanity in the face of literal and psychological darkness of night.
