May 18 at the New Museum: Arcangel Surfware Flagship, a critical txt upload, and Trail Blazers #9!

Arcangel Surfware's Flagship Store as mounted in Stavanger, Norway

On Saturday, May 18, Rhizome and Arcangel Surfware will host a day-long event in the New Museum's 7th floor Sky Room, as part of the exhibition "The Art Happens Here: Net Art's Archival Poetics." This event is free with museum admission, and includes:

  • The Arcangel Surfware Flagship Store Pop-Up (all-day): a bespoke retail environment, featuring recent and classic products from the "multinational software & merchandise publisher" based in Brooklyn, NY and Stavanger, Norway, and founded in 2014 by Cory Arcangel;
  • Critical Discourse (3PM): a conversation between Arcangel, Rebecca Cleman of Electronic Arts Intermix, and curator and writer Ed Halter, who will, as part of the event, live upload a TXT file containing a new essay on Arcangel's work, produced with the support of the Thoma Foundation; and
  • T R A I L  B L A Z E R S #9 (1-5PM): a live competition to crown the city's best web surfers. Developed at Merz Akademie in Stuttgart by artist Olia Lialina and her study group Beautiful Zeroes and Ugly Ones with Dragan Espenschied, Trail Blazers challenges competitors to navigate a route from one website to another only by clicking links—no logging in, no searches, and no back button. (Read about the last time we hosted this event.) This event will be hosted by Katie Notopoulos, with music by DJ Molly Soda. Do you have what it takes? If so, put in an application to compete via this form.

Please join us for this final event presented during "The Art Happens Here," which closes on May 26. (You might even be able to snag a tour of the exhibition from one of our team.)
