Portraiture: Inside Out

The Walsh Gallery at Seton Hall University is seeking submissions for a group exhibition curated by Ruth Ballester, Whitney Fehl, and Lauren Thompson. The call is open to all artists working towards expanding the definition portraiture. Portraiture: Inside Out seeks to emphasize the methods by which contemporary artists explore private identity of both the self and the other by denying formal and art historical conventions, as well as moving away from lofty social and political tendencies. It is the goal of this exhibition to foster an understanding and appreciation of unconventional approaches to the genre of portraiture, especially within a conceptual framework. All media will be considered, including (but not limited to) painting, drawing, prints, photography, sculpture, installation, new media, performance, and mixed-media works. The exhibition will specifically explore artists that reveal private identity through external physical cues and/or, interior psychological states of being. Performative works, installation and interventions will especially be favored.

$15/5 entries. Proceeds to be put toward a full color catalogue featuring each of the participating artists.

Deadline: January 7th, 2011.
