CFP Future Bodies: New Media Caucus 2022 Symposium and Exhibition

The New Media Caucus has extended our application, until March 22, 2022, for our 2022 Symposium and Exhibition, titled Future Bodies.

The symposium will take place September 30 - October 2, 2022 at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA.

The New Media Caucus 2022 Symposium and Exhibition Future Bodies is accepting submissions, with an extended deadline of March 22, 2022. Hosted by Virginia Tech University from September 30 – October 2, 2022, Future Bodies will present a constellation of new interdisciplinary research and practice in new media that considers the role of bodies, broadly conceived, in our collective future.

Considered as both material and metaphorical entities, bodies are at once subject to historical context and act as agents in forging new horizons of experience. Future Bodies will convene conversations around a set of interrelated questions about how bodies shape and intersect with art, technology, data, ecology, and history. We invite participants to explore how specific bodies, as sites of tension and contestation, are rendered, identified, and understood, and in turn, how they enable us to imagine and instantiate new futures inside and outside of established systems.

The New Media Caucus seeks to bring together artists and scholars working across disciplines, fields, and methodologies including but not limited to critical race theory, gender/trans/queer studies, disability studies, and environmental humanities. Proposals may engage topics that include, but are not limited to:
• What does thinking about bodies (past, present, or future) in relation to technology offer us
• Who and what gets to have a body (human and otherwise) and how is bodyhood valued and contested through technology?
• What might it mean to establish new forms of bodyhood in relation to intersectional locations of power?
• Where should we look for help imagining new forms of figuration, corporeal or otherwise? How can we better understand the problem of the body by thinking about different types of bodies; data bodies, bodies of knowledge, bodies of land/water, bodies of work, and more?
