Unit One/Allen Hall, through the School of Art + Design at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, invites applications for a part-time Adjunct Instructor or Adjunct Lecturer in the area of Graphic Design to teach one introductory course in graphic design per semester. This appointment requires service for one 9-month academic year, with the possibility of extension beyond the first year at the School’s discretion.

Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree in graphic design (or closely related field) is required for the rank of Adjunct Instructor. A terminal degree in graphic design (or closely-related field) is required for the rank of Adjunct Lecturer, and is highly preferred. Degrees in fields outside Graphic Design will be considered with significant professional experience in the field of Graphic Design. Candidates with prior undergraduate graphic design teaching experience beyond the level of teaching assistant are highly preferred. Candidates should also possess a demonstrated record of professional accomplishments. An excellent working knowledge of appropriate software is required. Applicants should demonstrate interest in teaching introductory courses to non-majors and willingness to collaborate with other staff and faculty in non-credit programs that are a component of the Unit One/Allen Hall Living-Learning Community.

Responsibilities:

Teach Introduction to Graphic Design, including principles of visual design & organization, visual communication, creative problem solving, design thinking, and digital media. Students should learn to create digital art for print and web media, with an emphasis on skills development using Adobe CS. Teaching load will be one course per semester.

Context:

Unit One is a Living-Learning Community in Allen Residence Hall on the University of Illinois campus. Unit One offers undergraduate students a creative and engaging community, a small college environment in a large campus setting. Academic courses in a variety of disciplines provide students with the ability to fulfill general education and elective requirements. Unit One has a legacy of providing students with the opportunity to explore visual and performing arts through credit courses and extra-curricular programs such as its Guest-In-Residence program. Courses are supported with on-site resources including a ceramics lab, black and white film photography lab, Mac computer lab, electronic music composition and recording studio, and web streaming radio station.

Residents of Allen Hall can create, design, and direct almost all aspects of the Unit One program. Staff at Unit One are especially responsive to helping students put their ideas into action. Allen Hall has a distinctive personality. Residents characterize it as a friendly, community-oriented hall that is forward-thinking, and highly accepting of diversity among students. Unit One/Allen Hall programs, many of which deal with contemporary political and social issues, add dimensions of controversy, activism, and social awareness to students' lives as an integral part of the educational goals of the program.
