Scenes and Screens Festival: Speculative Realities

The 2019 Scenes and Screens Festival is currently accepting submissions for papers, films, performances, and installations that center around the topic: Speculative Realities.

#SAS2019 is an all-in-VR arts, education, and technology event that provides contemporary artists and critical thinkers a platform to showcase their work and inspire international collaboration and meaningful discourse with a global audience.

The topic, Speculative Realities, encourages artists and scholars to consider virtual realms at a philosophical level. The subtopics that have emerged from these ideas allow for a wider interpretation and discourse that challenge our current notions of reality while also promoting the innovative use of social VR within art and media. As an example, virtual spaces create very real experiences despite their ephemeral qualities. Those spaces are alive and eerily unchanging despite their age, the only changes occurring when they are manipulated, deleted, or lost.

Alternatively, our relationship with virtual spaces and with each other are constantly evolving as new features and technologies are added to our proverbial tool set. Those that have found residence in these spaces, whether content creators or not, have found a way to make this experience work for them spiritually.

These are the subtopics for this year:
Degrees of Freedom, Moments of Inertia, and Presence of Mind.

The second annual Scenes and Screens Festival will be held on August 2nd-4th. The works presented at #SAS2019 will be documented and archived by AltspaceVR and then provided to the artists involved as their takeaway.

APPLICATION TERMS:
The AltspaceVR committee will be looking through the works submitted and will choose which ones will be included in the program this year. All those accepted for the festival, or those who may represent them, must be able to present the submitted work in-world through a 2D browser or in VR. AltspaceVR reserves the right to not choose any work for this festival as the decision of the committee is final.

Applications for the Scenes and Screens Festival should be received by no later than 11:59PM PT, May 15th, 2019. Chosen works will be notified of their selection by June 30th.

All works submitted must be completed at the point of submission and follow all guidelines for their categories, which are listed on the festival page.
