Responsibilities and Duties:

The School of Art and Design, New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University is seeking candidates for a tenure track faculty position in Expanded Media as Assistant Professor in illustration design with substantial experience in one or more of the following fields: 2d and/or 3d vector based illustration, motion graphics and information graphics. The position will begin August, 2019. The candidate will have the ability to teach illustration design as a creative practice at the undergraduate and graduate levels and in partnership with professional areas related to STEM. The candidate should be able to contribute to shared intersecting areas of expertise among colleagues in the Division of Expanded Media and in other areas of the School of Art and Design. The candidates teaching experience will include expertise that will help Design students develop new integrative pathways within Design and across the School of Art and Design.

Teaching and student research will be anchored in the use of vector based applications that can serve as connectors between disciplines. The candidate's ability to see and utilize the current range of output and rendering technologies within the Division of Expanded Media, initiate new systems and explore hybrid forms will be of particular importance.

Examples of desirable cross-disciplinary connections are listed below non-hierarchically and would vary depending on the candidate's strengths:
* illustration techniques utilized in contemporary electronic forms such as gaming and web design
* character design for animation and other narrative forms
* book design
* fabric design
* illustration for digital and/or traditional printing
* data visualization potentially connecting with School of Engineering
* extended drawing techniques that enhance graphic design and in other 2d areas

Teaching responsibilities include three classes: one sophomore or junior level undergraduate class, senior level advising, graduate level advising and participation in the Foundations program. Other responsibilities during the semester include attendance at faculty meetings and active engagement in professional research.

The Division of Expanded Media is one of six divisions in a comprehensive art school with a very active faculty and prolific student body who access renowned facilities for artistic and scholarly research.

Requirements:

Minimum qualifications include an M.F.A. in studio art or design or its equivalent, an active professional creative practice, including a record of exhibitions and projects beyond the local and regional level.

Experience:

Three years previous college-level teaching experience is preferred.

All written materials including website and links to video servers such as Vimeo and YouTube must be submitted in PDF format. Cloud server download links will not be accepted; no files will be downloaded. Candidates should clearly list all works contained in the application.

Still images including vector files, layouts and other illustration or design forms must be submitted as jpegs, TIFF or production quality PDF. Illustrations and/or layouts that are "packaged" or require special programs to be viewed will not be considered.

Videos, animations, 3d animations, 3d characters, and virtual art must be submitted in video form using Apple Prores 422, H.246 or GIF formats. Project files requiring special software will not be reviewed.

Interactive works and games may be submitted on interactive websites. These websites must be compatible with Mac platforms.

Works completed with self-authored code, must be submitted as video or still images. Project files requiring special software will not be reviewed. Compiled, executable, free-standing software will not be reviewed.

Book projects and pamphlets may be submitted as document images only. Hard copies may not be submitted.

Audio files must be submitted as AIFF, WAV, or MP3.

Submissions must include: name, title, date, software used in creation, format type, and length (if applicable). Collaborative work must clearly indicate the candidate's role in the work's creation.
