MacEwan University’s Department of Art and Design is seeking an artist-educator specializing in Studio Art to fill a new full-time continuing position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge of the theory, practice and history of contemporary art and have a commitment to critical thinking and contemporary art practice, working in or across a range of media and environments in at least two of the following areas: time-based media (digital video, sound art), contemporary and extended approaches to 2D visual art (e.g., extended painting, drawing, photography), digital art (e.g., networked, generative or interactive screen-based practice); performance art, social practice, or emerging forms. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, and the ability to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

The Department of Art and Design is situated within the Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications of MacEwan University in Edmonton, Alberta. Beginning in September 2017, the Department will be housed at the new, state-of-the-art Centre for the Arts and Culture as part of MacEwan University’s main campus in downtown Edmonton, in close proximity to the downtown arts district. With a dedication to teaching excellence informed by scholarly research and creative activity, MacEwan provides an exceptional collaborative and supportive learning environment with a commitment to environmental sustainability and opportunities for community engagement.

The preferred candidate will hold a terminal degree (MFA), with a significant exhibition record at the national and international level, with evidence of ongoing research-creation. They will have a minimum three years of experience teaching post-secondary art at all undergraduate levels, demonstrating excellence in teaching foundations for contemporary art practice, as well as vision and experience towards developing new approaches to teaching art at the undergraduate level.

Applicants will submit a letter of interest, current Curriculum Vitae, artist’s statement, digital portfolio with examples of creative and scholarly work, teaching dossier that includes a teaching philosophy, sample syllabi from courses taught, sample images of student work, teaching evaluations and the names of three professional references. Review of applications will commence March 15, 2017 and the competition will remain open until the successful candidate has been found.
